Standby was founded in 2006 by artists Amy Thomas and Rachel Dornan. Standbys all encompassing ethos fundamentally aims to help emerging artists and to broaden our perceptions of how art is viewed, whether that be through organising exhibitions, talks and workshops or launching publications. Often working out with the traditional gallery context utilising unusual, unused and borrowed spaces, has allowed Standby to develop an organic, site and time specific programme of events.
Standby has worked with a number of emerging artists in a variety of spaces and contexts from domestic settings to unused retail units, organising temporary exhibitions and happenings. The fluidity of the organisation allows for challenging and unexpected collaborations that vary from month-long exhibitions to one-night events. As well as providing opportunities for young artists to exhibit, Standby looks to help and support local artists by providing a casual programme of talks and workshops.
For the New Work Scotland 2008, Standby will provide a month long programme of events developed specifically to help young and emerging local artists.

For Annuale 08, Standby presents – Three.
Three one-night exhibitions, which take place at varying locations across Edinburgh.
Standby seeks to explore and challenge the way in which we view art through hosting exhibitions and events in unlikely settings, these often take the form of one night events and vary from solo to group shows. Three brings together the artists Janice Smelt, Chris Viviani and Alex McAndrew – each artist explores our desires and disgusts, our interpersonal relationships and our perceived attitudes and beliefs. Every evening an artist will be given centre stage – a miniature solo-exhibition, allowing the audience to engage with the work individually but to also contemplate the exhibition as a whole.
